Emerging artists have taken risks and embraced challenges.

Indeed, emerging artists  are rigorous in their approach to creation and production.

Emerging Northwest artists  have some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment.

Emerging artists introduced  at Fairweather’s are not recognized as established artists by other artists, curators, and galleries.

And, so, it goes forward!

Introducing emerging artist Ashley Howarth, 2017.

“After graduating from Oregon State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts , life experiences have given me an appreciation  for the Pacific Northwest and the natural world which has, in turn, provided me with the basic foundation for my artistic choices.

I want to push the boundaries of the mediums I work with to create art that draws in the viewer. I also want to continue developing my understanding of color and explore combinations in my palette to create a harmonious piece. Although, up until this point the natural world has been my main source of inspiration, as well as my love to imagine a fantasy world where past myths, legends and stories come to life in my mediums.

As I continue to grow I will always strive to push my boundaries and continue to bloom as a young emerging artist.” – Ashley Howarth

Mermaid and Moon Intaglio first edition.

Q:  What is intaglio art, you ask?

A:  In intaglio printing, the image is etched into a metal plate by using a cutting tool to engrave. To print an intaglio plate, ink is applied to the surface to push the ink into the recessed lines.

Damp  paper is placed on the plate, so that when going through the press the damp paper will be able to be squeezed into the plate’s ink-filled grooves.  The rolling press applies high pressure to push the paper into the grooves on the plate, then lifted, revealing the paper and printed image.–Ashley Howarth

Q:  What is a screen print, you ask?

A:  Screen printing is a printing technique where mesh screen is used to transfer ink onto paper, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. One color is printed at a time, creating layers of colors that work together to create a composition.–Ashley

Snowy Fox. Lino cut by Ashley Howarth.

Q:  What is a lino cut print, you ask?

A: A lino cut relief printing is a process where you carve away the negative space to create a positive image by carving away protruding surface from the plate; after the surface is inked and printed onto paper. –Ashley

January 2017 grace note received:

“The mermaids in the front window look great! It’s nice seeing my work up where everyone can see them. They look wonderful at night with the spot light on them. I came back on a recent evening with my family and they thought that they looked great up in the window display, as well. Thank you again, I really appreciate all the help and guidance.”   –Ashley Howarth

Q:  What is an emerging artist, you ask?

A:   “The term emerging refers to artistic development, professional accomplishment, and recognition. Emerging artists take risks and embrace challenges; are rigorous in their approach to creation and production; have some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment; and are not recognized as established artists by other artists, curators, and galleries. Fairweather House and Gallery has sought to support emerging regional artists who show significant potential.” –Denise Fairweather, gallerist.

In the past ten years Fairweather House and Gallery has supported  the artistic launching of the following Northwest talents: Kristin Qian, Britney Drumheller,  Robert Mc Whirter, Nick Brakel, Rebecca Gore, Linda Trexler, Michael Wing and Gayle H. Seely, among others.

Art Saves

Fairweather Gallery  celebrated its 10th anniversary on March 5th with an exhibition titled “Above and Beyond.” The show offered timely and relevant works of art about the spring season. Regional artists in the show were selected to acknowledge the coastal flyway habitats and to awaken visitors’ senses to nature from the ground up.  Image featured original calligraphy by Penelope Culbertson, original oil pastels by Lori Wallace-Lloyd and original oil on linen floral by Melissa Jander.  Our gallery specializes in contemporary, traditional and transitional works in a variety of mediums from a select group of established and emerging artists from the Northwest and beyond.

For more information about featured  artists please visit http://www.fairweatherhouseandgallery.com/artists

Britney Drumheller, Cannon Beach celebrity artist and by popular request,  the lead artist for ABOVE and BEYOND, will be at the opening reception  during the Seaside First Saturday Art Walk on March 5th.  It’s Fairweather’s 1oth  anniversary!!! It’s Britney’s 6th unveiling at Fairweather’s.

In Progress

And, too, one of the largest pieces is collaboration between her mentor Abbas Atwi, as Britney typically works in the macro world.

Cannon Beach celebrity artist Britney Drumheller accepts two bouquets prior to her opening reception.

So save the date for Britney Drumheller’s  6th unveiling (!!!) at the Fairweather Gallery on Saturday March 5th, from 5:00 to 7:00pm; she has the honor of being appointed the lead artist for the Fairweather’s “Above and Beyond” Art Walk. Staying true with the theme, she is pushing her comfort zone by fusing several elements of texture to create one subject to truly take her work above and beyond.

“I am humbled to be joining efforts Abbas Atwi,  a talented and accomplished painter,  having the opportunity to learn from his expertise. As Abbas’s paint dries, my markers come to life to enhance the detail and structure of the original piece. My comfort is to work within the realm of these markers.

Abbas Atwi has inspired me to merge his skill of acrylics with my passion for markers, thus giving the image another dimension of detail.

Keeping true to my intricate style I will be applying this new technique to highlight some my coastal favorites, such as a variety of native coastal birds and sea creatures.”Britney Drumheller

“Exited for the art show! I’m hoping for 8-10 pieces with new techniques of layering. One of the larger pieces is an original mixed media acrylic & marker 24×36” collaboration between Abbas Atwi and I am so pleased with it, and excited to have it done for the show. The attached image of the mixed media (that is not complete) as Abbas has more painting & I have more sketching! (but will give you an idea). As you can see with the close up of the barnacles, I am going through using marker to capture the smaller details.”–Britney
